What is a stakeholder map?

A stakeholder map shows everyone who has an interest in a project or can influence its outcome, such as managers, team members, customers, partners or authorities. A common version places stakeholders in a grid by their influence and their interest.

The map makes it easier to plan communication and involvement, and to spot early who could support or block the project.

When to map your stakeholders

  • Project kickoffs Identify everyone involved before you plan communication.
  • Change management Understand who is affected by a change and how to bring them along.
  • Communication planning Decide who needs which information and how often.
  • Risk assessment Spot potential resistance early.

Keeping your stakeholder map useful

  • Be specific Name people or roles, not just departments.
  • Include the critics Add stakeholders who might oppose the project. They often matter most.
  • Review regularly Influence and interest change over the course of a project.
  • Derive actions Turn each group into concrete communication steps.
